The last step in re-doing my door panels is the polished aluminum belt just above the arm rest. Mine were scratched here and there so I search the web on how to re-finish the aluminum. After sanding my a$$ off and 3 more steps on the buffing wheels I have them about as good as I can get. Now to decide what to clear coat them with. I've read what some painters have used and it sounds like it works well, but an expensive process for 4 pieces of trim. Has anyone clear-coated interior aluminum with any success, and what did you use? Thanks for any help on this one, Bob C _________________ It's gonna be cool when it's done

The aluminuim trim on 64/65 door panels, quarter panels and the seat trim was originaly anodized, it is the anodized finish that is making the white powder as you try to remove it. To refinish it to original the anodizing has to be stripped by reversing the current in the plating tank, then it is repolished and anodized which puts a hard chemical conversion coating on the surface that makes it very hard and durable.
Over tha last ten years or so a number of members on the Tbird.org forum have stripped the anodizing in many ways including Easy-Off oven cleaner and mixes of various chemicals.
About 12 years ago I had the chrome shop strip the anodizing in their tank then took out the dents polished it wraped it in stretch wrap to keep it from oxidising then the powder coater finished with clear. The finished looked great for 2 or 3 years then started to turn a bet hazey not good for a Primary Division car so I located a replacement set and had them anodized not cheap but they still look great after several years.
I think the PC set is still in my parts storage. _________________ Jim Mills
